Target-Based Learning
What is target-based learning?
Target-based learning begins with the end, or learning target, in mind. We begin by asking, "What do we want our students to know and be able to do?" Once the learning target has been identified, teachers plan their instruction using these 4 questions:
How will we facilitate learning for all types of learners?
How will we know if they learn it?
How will we respond when some students to not learn?
How will we extend the learning for students who are already proficient?
Teaching is responsive to learning. Instruction focuses on what students understand and what they can do with that understanding. Students who do not meet the target receive additional instruction, practice, or support to guide them in reaching the target. Students who show mastery of a target are offered more complex material or new learning targets. Teachers regularly provide feedback, reteach, and offer additional opportunities for all students to reach the target.
Target-based Grading
Target-based learning is represented differently than a traditional report card. This allows both parents and teachers to continue working on skills that are not yet mastered.
